The Gift of Time

As a child, I often caught myself wishing time away…

To be double digits…
To be able to drive…
To be a senior, then off to college…
To be married…

As someone who has sat at the bedside of a loved one, it is in those moments that you realize the gift of time, and we beg for more time..

To have one more day…
To have one more I love you…
To have one more connection–a hand squeeze, a smile…

Why do we lose sight of things until it is too late?

James 4:14 says, “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like a morning fog–it is here a little while, then it’s gone” (NLT).

Our lives are but a vapor–

As I turned 50 a few weeks back, I entered what I think is normal self-reflection:
Where have I been, and where am I going?
What have I done with my 50 years?

Inheritance of Hope, an organization very near and dear to my heart, taught me the importance of taking the sting out of having these times of reflection. When Bryan had cancer, they helped us accept the reality, but also to find the beauty in that season.

Death is something we will all face–

But we have this moment–
We have the gift of time in this moment.

What will we do with this time?
What will our legacy be?
What will we be remembered by?

They often say at the bedside of a loved one–work, cars, and money have no value.

What will be remembered is–
the special memories, the words spoken–the time spent together.

I can honestly say I haven’t appreciated the gift of time.
I am guilty of letting it slip between busy schedules, life demands, and the promise of the next chapter of life.

May I learn this lesson well and live with intent–

May I see the amazing gift given–the gift of time. May my time be filled with loving others, forgiving often, creating memories, and living with heaven in mind.

The gift of time–the gift of today–the gift of this moment–it is but a vapor; may we treasure and use it well.
