Quiet Prayer – January 2013

Inheritance of Hope co-founder Kristen Milligan died on October 26, 2012. The following is part of a Bible study series she wrote. My plan for each week is for you to have four days of study and one day set aside for prayer or to catch up on a day missed. Perhaps this could be the day of a longer run. With three young children, our home is rarely quiet. I have recently

relearned the value of the Psalm (46:10), “Be still and know that I am God.” I sometimes have to work hard to find that quiet time to pray, and more importantly, to listen. Training is always time that is still. My body is not still, of course, but because I am alone my mind is still and I often hear God speaking to me during that time. I encourage you to turn off your mp3 player during at least part of your run. Listen instead to God’s encouragement and direction.

Here is something that was a great encouragement to me, especially after our looking together this week at the weaknesses in our lives. Perhaps this is something for you to think about during your run today. Look again at 2 Corinthians, chapter 1.

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

This devotional is part of a Bible study series titled Allowing His Power to be Perfect in Weakness written by Inheritance of Hope co-founder Kristen Milligan. The study consists of messages like this sent via email each morning for five days a week. The full series lasts sixteen weeks, though it can be tailored to shorter periods. The study also includes weekly questions, making it ideal for group discussion.
