Referral FAQs
Who can refer a family to Inheritance of Hope?
Anyone who 1) knows a young family affected by a parent’s life-threatening or terminal illness and 2) wants to help them.
Can I refer my own family to Inheritance of Hope?
Yes!
Who is eligible for Inheritance of Hope?
Our focus is families with 1) at least one child in the household and 2) a legal parent/guardian living with or deceased from an illness that is considered life-threatening or terminal (any diagnosis that is degenerative, progressive, or malignant such that the children are facing the loss of their parent).
While our emphasis is on young families facing a parent’s illness, our services have been found helpful by people in a variety of illness-, death-, and grief-related circumstances.
Each member of the household is eligible; individual members of the family can participate even if other family members prefer not to.
We offer tailored, age-appropriate resources and services for the diagnosed parent, the caregiver, and children from newborn to young adult.
Families are eligible both while living with illness and in life after loss.
We welcome and accommodate non-English languages.
What does it cost?
We don’t want cost to be a barrier. The costs of Inheritance of Hope services are covered by generous donors so young families affected by terminal illness can participate freely.
When are services offered?
You can refer a family to Inheritance of Hope at any time.
Services are offered year-round, in an ongoing capacity.
Where are services offered?
We offer programs online and onsite around the United States, as well as resources that are available anywhere.
Families can choose any and all that is of interest to them.
How do families benefit from Inheritance of Hope?
We provide community with other families in similar situations and loving volunteers, so families don’t feel alone but experience that others “get it” and care.
With Inheritance of Hope, families don’t have to choose between being realistic or hope-filled. They can embrace the mixed thoughts and feelings they actually have, with our community’s perspective of “jorrow”™: joy and sorrow at the same time.
What if I’m not sure whether or not the family wants help?
It is much harder for families to ask for help than to benefit from it once it is offered, so we strongly recommend referring the family you care about. We will contact them with experience in assessing what would or would not be helpful. If they end up not wanting any help at this time, then we can all celebrate that they are in good shape, and they will know that an entire organization is ready to help later if needed.
Also, often there is at least one person in the family who wants help even when other family members do not. If you don’t refer them, how will they get the opportunity to benefit from help that is available?
What if I’m not sure the family is quite the right fit for Inheritance of Hope’s services?
We are connected to many organizations for families facing a variety of illness and bereavement situations, and offering a variety of services. If Inheritance of Hope is not the right fit for the family you refer, we will gladly connect them to an organization that is the right fit. You don’t have to be an expert in all the options – refer the family you care about to Inheritance of Hope, and we will get them to the care they need, whether within our organization or with another.
I’m interested but not sure. Is there someone I can talk to?
