Supporting families through endurance events!
Inheritance of Hope has partnered with Dalzell Coaching. While the partnership will be an incredible asset to our Team IOH athletes, there’s more to the story. Meet Derek Dalzell…
Growing up as a child without a parent is without a doubt the hardest thing that I’ve encountered in my short life. At the age of 10, I lost my father, who was my best friend. I went through most of my childhood feeling like
Nearly 200 volunteers participated in Inheritance of Hope’s 2nd Annual Legacy Run! This year, Team IoH Director, Candice Walsh, identified Chantel Azevedo to serve as Volunteer Coordinator. A native of Toronto, Chantel graduated from Brevard College in May 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Studies with an emphasis in Political Science and Communications. Her leadership was critical to the success of the Legacy Run.
As Volunteer Coordinator, Chantel coordinated, planned, and managed all aspects of volunteer initiatives. In addition to race day volunteer communications and responsibilities, she also planned and managed the volunteer work-night and volunteer appreciation dinner. Chantel’s leadership was also integral to the efficiency of the Pre-race Pasta Dinner and Bib Pick-Up event. Thank you, Chantel!
How did you become involved with Inheritance of Hope? As a senior student-athlete at Brevard College last April 2013, I volunteered my time to help with the first annual Legacy Run Pasta Dinner and Bib Pick-Up at the Brevard Community Church. At the time, I did not know what the Legacy Run was nor who Inheritance of Hope was.
I had so much fun meeting many of the runners who were going to be participating in the race the next day and as a bonus, the pasta dinner was excellent! As the night progressed, the time came when Executive Director Deric Milligan as well as Director Candice Walsh were scheduled to be on stage to talk about Inheritance of Hope.
Almost 370 participants, over 100 volunteers, HUGE community support and God's smile ... the Inheritance of Hope 2013 Legacy Run 15K, 5K and Kids' 1/2 Mile Fun Run took place on April 27, 2013. Gathering at Brevard College, Brevard, NC, for festivities and the start and finish - it was a great time for all!
Anna contacted me last January. She said she was interested in running the Disneyland Half Marathon, September 2, 2012 to support Inheritance of Hope. Team IOH does not participate as a team in the Disneyland Half but Anna still wanted to raise funds and run the race for IOH families! Throughout the year, many runners do the same. They run halfs, marathons, mud runs, tris, and 5ks as individual runners. It's their way of running beside and supporting the families that Inheritance of Hope serves. Thank you, Anna, for sharing this wonderful story ... and thank you for raising over $1500! ~Lisa

As a member of a family living with cancer, I know how easy it can be to get overwhelmed. That was why I chose to run for Inheritance of Hope; because I’ve been there, and because I felt that a cause that could make the process easier for someone else was absolutely worth working for.
Today we pause to honor the memory of our friend Gerry Moors. Gerry, of Pine Bush, NY, died on August 25 at the age of 78. He had been diagnosed with mesothelioma lung cancer in September 2009. Along with his wife, Joan, and his daughter, Maryalice, Gerry organized the Gerry Moors Golf Outing at Winding Hills Golf Course in Montgomery, NY, beginning in 2010. Inheritance of Hope was the sole benefactor of those efforts, which raised over $34,000 in support of young families facing a parent's life-threatening illness.
Gerry will be remembered as a generous and caring friend. Maryalice said the following about his support of Inheritance of Hope:
Fundraising can be scary ... and can be overwhelming for some of us. And these feelings can lead to putting off getting started. I know, because I've been there. But, I've learned that fundraising isn't so hard or scary, and can even be invigorating.
"If you run without any reason, you are just chasing the wind." - Wesley Korir, 2012 Boston Marathon winner
So, how do I get started fundraising??
Inheritance of Hope will be celebrating its 5th birthday next Monday, May 21st! I have watched the growth of Inheritance of Hope and its subsequent outreach to 99 families since its inception in 2007. I have watched my friends, Deric and Kristen Milligan, Inheritance of Hope founders, take up the challenge to live vibrantly after a diagnosis that would send most of us staggering.
