Thankful for Legacies: Larisa Gjivoje, Team Inheritance of Hope

Our founder, Kristen Milligan, left a profound legacy with her family and the families we serve. As we approach the second anniversary of her death, we showcase members of our Inheritance of Hope family and what legacy means to them.

Larisa Gjivoje ran the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon with Team Inheritance of Hope. She raised $8,301 -- more than enough to send an entire family to a Legacy Retreat®

The Legacy of Love: My parents created a loving home environment. We told each other "I love you" when leaving for the day, ending our phone calls, going to bed, and many other times. My husband and I do the same in our family with two young children. Expressing love for each other is powerful and everlasting.

The Legacy of Family Togetherness: My family usually ate dinner together, which was a tough feat. Because both of my parents worked, it was late sometimes. But the trade-off was priceless; it was an important tradition to share each other's day and be connected. My mom even insisted on candlelight during our meals. My husband and I follow this legacy with our children –- and even use candles!

Dalzell Coaching

Inheritance of Hope has partnered with Dalzell Coaching.  While the partnership will be an incredible asset to our Team IOH athletes, there’s more to the story.  Meet Derek Dalzell…

Growing up as a child without a parent is without a doubt the hardest thing that I’ve encountered in my short life. At the age of 10, I lost my father, who was my best friend. I went through most of my childhood feeling like

My Team IOH Experience ~ (running an individual race)

Anna's family

Anna's family

Anna contacted me last January.  She said she was interested in running the Disneyland Half Marathon, September 2, 2012 to support Inheritance of Hope.  Team IOH does not participate as a team in the Disneyland Half but Anna still wanted to raise funds and run the race for IOH families!  Throughout the year, many runners do the same. They run halfs, marathons, mud runs, tris, and 5ks as individual runners.  It's their way of running beside and supporting the families that Inheritance of Hope serves.  Thank you, Anna, for sharing this wonderful story ... and thank you for raising over $1500!   ~Lisa

As a member of a family living with cancer, I know how easy it can be to get overwhelmed. That was why I chose to run for Inheritance of Hope; because I’ve been there, and because I felt that a cause that could make the process easier for someone else  was absolutely worth working for.

Tribute to Gerry Moors

Gerry Moors with his daughter Maryalice

Gerry Moors with his daughter Maryalice

Today we pause to honor the memory of our friend Gerry Moors.  Gerry, of Pine Bush, NY, died on August 25 at the age of 78.  He had been diagnosed with mesothelioma lung cancer in September 2009.  Along with his wife, Joan, and his daughter, Maryalice, Gerry organized the Gerry Moors Golf Outing at Winding Hills Golf Course in Montgomery, NY, beginning in 2010.  Inheritance of Hope was the sole benefactor of those efforts, which raised over $34,000 in support of young families facing a parent's life-threatening illness.

Gerry will be remembered as a generous and caring friend.  Maryalice said the following about his support of Inheritance of Hope:

How Do I Get Started Fundraising??

Fundraising can be scary ... and can be overwhelming for some of us.  And these feelings can lead to putting off getting started.  I know, because I've been there.  But, I've learned that fundraising isn't so hard or scary, and can even be invigorating.

"If you run without any reason, you are just chasing the wind." - Wesley Korir, 2012 Boston Marathon winner

So, how do I get started fundraising??
