Athlete Spotlight: Andrea Kent

Andrea Kent was not a runner until 2000, when her husband of 20 years died unexpectedly. She began to run in order to cope with her grief, and explains, “I didn’t know what to do, so I just started running.” Within a year, she ran her first marathon. Now, at age 59, she has completed ten marathons, numerous half-marathons, and a number of triathlons, racking up awards and accolades along the way.

Andrea’s next race is the Big Sur International Marathon in California on Sunday, April 30th.

Running Inspiration

The NYC Half Marathon is coming up on March 18.  (We still have a few bibs left if you would like to join us!)  As a race approaches, I often ponder how important the runners are to our organization.  The funds raised by our runners are critical to sustaining and growing the Inheritance of Hope Legacy Retreats.  These retreats are one of the main outreaches of IOH, reaching families across the nation with hope and support for their journey facing a life-threatening diagnosis.

I was privileged to participate in this February's Disney Legacy Retreat that took place a couple weeks ago.  12 families attended - and lives were impacted and changed - in both families attending and volunteers serving.

How many times have we gotten to a point in life where we feel we can't go any further?  Often, the way we make it through those times is through the help and encouragement of a friend.  In this blog, Lara Miller shares her experience about joining Team IOH for the Disney Marathon on January 8, 2012 - and the blessing of becoming friends and running with Nicole.

Running Streaks

DSC_0291

There are numerous runners throughout the US that have been continuously running for years - many over thirty years.  They are men and women that run at least 1 mile every day of every week of every year.  Mark Washburne, a 55 year old college professor from New Jersey, has run every day since December 31, 1989, adding up more than 33,000 miles.  Washburne is the president of the United States Running Streak Association (USRSA) an association established for people like Washburne that want to officially log their consecutive daily runs...

A word from a Team IOH runner

DSC_0067Today we will hear from Grace Gerdin.  Grace has run with Team Inheritance of Hope in two events – the 2010 NYC Half Marathon and the 2011 NYC Half Marathon.  This year, Grace was the top fundraiser for the NYC Half Team – raising over $3,700.  As you will read, not only has Grace blessed families by raising funds for IOH, but she has also received a personal blessing by increasing her personal fitness level – which, in turn, has been inspirational to her children.

Thoughts from a Team Inheritance of Hope athlete

DSC_0111I am happy to share a blog post from Michael Chappell.  Michael ran with Team Inheritance of Hope in the 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon.  It was his first marathon – a memorable experience because of it being his first … as well as the fact that the temperature was crazy cold – about 30 degrees!  Michael shined as he ran for the families attending the Disney retreat that same weekend.  Inspired by this event Michael went from running for families, to running with his family.  Michael will share a memorable experience running with his family this past year…

3 Days Until Chicago

The clock is ticking.  The Chicago Marathon is in 3 days.  18 weeks of training are behind me - I ran my last training run this morning - a 2 miler.  It is a great feeling to know that I have finished my preparation for this Sunday.  I have completed my long runs, often in high humidity and heat.  I have run... in rain; when I didn't have the time to run; when I didn't feel like running; and when I did feel like running.  I even had to jump over a copperhead snake on my last 20 miler!  The really great thing is that I'm still running, have all my toenails intact, and I'm injury free.  Often, I am totally amazed at how things can work out!

I believe my last big obstacle for the race this Sunday is completing the mental preparation.
