God is Always Faithful - May 2017

Heather originally shared this in preparation for the May 6 Hunter Subaru Legacy Run.

When life is challenging, even though I know I am doing what God has called me to do, I often forget that He wants me to succeed and delights in blessing me!  The staff and volunteers of Inheritance of Hope earnestly seek God's face and His will and strive to know and follow His word.

Athlete Spotlight: Shawanna White

Shawanna White was the first female half marathoner to cross the 2016 Hunter Subaru Legacy Run finish line with a time of 1:24:17. She’s been running 17 years and has participated in many races, including Cooper River Bridge (SC), Mercedes Benz Marathon (AL), and Get In The Pink 10k (SC).

I am originally from Atlanta, GA, but I currently reside in Columbia, SC. I graduated from the University of West Georgia with a BS in Physical Education. I started running in 10th grade because my high school coach saw me in the office one day and asked me to run track. I told him he would have to ask my grandma. She said yes, but only if he brought me home because it would be too late to ride the bus and there was no family car to be used.

What’s your favorite race?

Family Spotlight: Strebe Family

Strebe Family at Their Legacy Retreat®
Strebe Family at their Legacy Retreat®

The Strebe family—Jon, Donna, Luke, Ryan, and Emma Kate—attended an Orlando Legacy Retreat® in February 2014, shortly after Jon underwent a bone marrow transplant and thoracic surgery. At the time, he was battling stage 3 testicular cancer metastases to the lungs.  Donna remembers that the trip to Orlando came at a very emotional time.

“It had been a tough year, and the volunteers served from the bottom of their souls and blessed us. We said from that point forward we would serve as long as we were able.”

Wet Weather Doesn’t Stop Community From Inspiring Hope: Brevard Residents Take Top Honors

On Saturday, April 25th, hundreds of runners and walkers from the Brevard, North Carolina, community inspired hope by participating in the 3rd annual Legacy Run presented by Hunter Subaru, Food Matters Market, and Brevard First United Methodist Church. The event served as a fundraiser for Inheritance of Hope, a local non-profit organization that inspires hope in young families facing the loss of a parent. 100% of the event proceeds will go toward hosting more families at a Legacy Retreat®, an all-expenses-paid experience where families create lifelong memories and receive tools to navigate the challenges of a parent’s terminal illness.

After a pre-race celebration dinner at Brevard Community Church on Friday, April 24th, runners and walkers of all ages embraced the wet weather conditions on race day in the “Heart of Brevard.” Participants were led by Subaru pace cars, provided by presenting sponsor Hunter Subaru, through beautiful Brevard while children enjoyed many kids’ activities on Main Street before the popular Kids’ Fun Run. All participants enjoyed fruit and Kind bars before the race and delicious, healthy bagged lunches after the race, compliments of presenting sponsor Food Matters Market and Café.

Team Spotlight: Teresa Meier

As an endurance athlete, Teresa Meier knows a thing or two about perseverance. And as an oncology pharmacist, she is familiar with the effects of cancer.  Those two roles have helped make her a champion of Inheritance of Hope (IoH) and strengthened her conviction that leaving a legacy is one thing cancer cannot take away from anyone.

“Raising money for research is very important. But what I love about IoH is that they make an impact on families TODAY. IoH focuses on developing a legacy, living right now and creating memories. Those are things that cancer cannot take away from you.”
