Running Streaks

DSC_0291

There are numerous runners throughout the US that have been continuously running for years - many over thirty years.  They are men and women that run at least 1 mile every day of every week of every year.  Mark Washburne, a 55 year old college professor from New Jersey, has run every day since December 31, 1989, adding up more than 33,000 miles.  Washburne is the president of the United States Running Streak Association (USRSA) an association established for people like Washburne that want to officially log their consecutive daily runs...

Gerry Moors - an incredible person, an example of giving

DSC_0052

As the 2nd Annual Gerry Moors Golf Outing is fast approaching - June 18th to be exact - I was looking through my notes from last year's inaugural event.  I came across a note Maryalice had written me that gave insight into the heart of her father, Gerry.  It so impressed me to again see the tenaciousness, perseverence and generosity of her father...

A word from a Team IOH runner

DSC_0067Today we will hear from Grace Gerdin.  Grace has run with Team Inheritance of Hope in two events – the 2010 NYC Half Marathon and the 2011 NYC Half Marathon.  This year, Grace was the top fundraiser for the NYC Half Team – raising over $3,700.  As you will read, not only has Grace blessed families by raising funds for IOH, but she has also received a personal blessing by increasing her personal fitness level – which, in turn, has been inspirational to her children.

Online Training on the IOH Site

Every couple posts, I am going to review a benefit of running with Team Inheritance of Hope in an endurance event.  Of course, the greatest benefit is knowing that you are making a lasting difference in the lives of families facing a 'marathon' of their own.  But, this week, I want to tell you about the online training module made available to Team IOH members...

From one of our Disney 'Goofy' runners!

Going Goofy: Disney runs benefit Inheritance of Hope

By Caroline Maynard Lamar Special to The Daily Times

I wasn’t born a marathoner. For much of my life I regarded people who ran those kind of distances with a mixture of fear and awe. But there I was in the fall of 2007, crossing the finish line of my first 26.2 mile race. Immediately I knew that I had to run another one, so in 2009 I traveled to Orlando to run the Disney World Marathon. While I was there I learned that Disney offered a special medal, a Goofy medal, to runners who completed both the half marathon and the full marathon on back-to-back days. With that knowledge, I knew I had to be a Disney racer at least one more time.

Highlights and ambitions!

pkqzA4

As the year is winding down to a close, and Christmas will soon be here, it's a great time to reflect on 2010 accomplishments and 2011 goals.  It's also an opportunity to express my gratitude towards all who were involved in Team Inheritance of Hope events - whether participating as a donor, a volunteer or an athlete.

To get a good picture of where you are, I believe it is important to reflect on where you have come from.  We began Team Inheritance of Hope in 2009 with 12 athletes.  Now, in 2010, we have blossomed...

Thoughts from a Team Inheritance of Hope athlete

DSC_0111I am happy to share a blog post from Michael Chappell.  Michael ran with Team Inheritance of Hope in the 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon.  It was his first marathon – a memorable experience because of it being his first … as well as the fact that the temperature was crazy cold – about 30 degrees!  Michael shined as he ran for the families attending the Disney retreat that same weekend.  Inspired by this event Michael went from running for families, to running with his family.  Michael will share a memorable experience running with his family this past year…

3 Days Until Chicago

The clock is ticking.  The Chicago Marathon is in 3 days.  18 weeks of training are behind me - I ran my last training run this morning - a 2 miler.  It is a great feeling to know that I have finished my preparation for this Sunday.  I have completed my long runs, often in high humidity and heat.  I have run... in rain; when I didn't have the time to run; when I didn't feel like running; and when I did feel like running.  I even had to jump over a copperhead snake on my last 20 miler!  The really great thing is that I'm still running, have all my toenails intact, and I'm injury free.  Often, I am totally amazed at how things can work out!

I believe my last big obstacle for the race this Sunday is completing the mental preparation.

What Motivates You?

As I sit by my computer, thinking about the above question, I wonder what could have possibly motivated me to run another marathon?  Because I'm asking myself this question, I realize that my 20 mile run this Friday is weighing heavy on my mind!

I'm a Runner?

Today I'm happy to bring to you a post written by Heather Mosman.  I met Heather last January at the 2010 Disney Marathon Weekend.  It was such a joy getting to know her ... and I'll get to see her again in a few weeks in Chicago!  As Heather says, "Go Team IOH!!!" ~ Lisa

Last year I would not have called myself a "runner".  In fact, I haven't run for exercise (or pleasure) since college.  Even then, it wasn't really my thing.  However, I have always been a person that can be inspired by a good cause.  That is what has made me into a runner....

Organic vs. Conventional

I have a real interest in food, including food quality.  What we put into our bodies matters - for race performance, as well as for general health.  I have been eating a vegan diet since 2003.  This has been a little challenging - especially when trying to make sure I don't eat too many processed carbs when eating additional calories during marathon training.  Another challenge is deciding when to buy organic vs. conventional produce...

26 for Families

I found 26 cents on my 7.5 mile training run today.  (I always stop to pick up money while I'm running - and most of the time it's a penny!)  I saw the quarter first and then about a 100 yards further, I saw the penny.  As I ran a bit further, with the quarter and penny between my thumb and middle finger, I thought about the 26 miles I'll be running on October 10th for children and their families...
