Inheritance of Hope will be celebrating its 5th birthday next Monday, May 21st!  I have watched the growth of Inheritance of Hope and its subsequent outreach to 99 families since its inception in 2007.  I have watched my friends, Deric and Kristen Milligan, Inheritance of Hope founders, take up the challenge to live vibrantly after a diagnosis that would send most of us staggering.

The New York Road Runner’s have chosen Team IOH to be a part of the 2012 ING NYC Marathon charity program.  With the 5 spots awarded, the Team IOH goal is to raise at least $50,000 (each team member with a goal of $10,000), which will send 10 families on the NYC Legacy Retreat this November. One spot on the team is still available.

Extreme Waterfall after Rain

It’s that time of year to start thinking about a training plan for your summer or fall race.  Training for a race can often be extreme… like, going out on a 20 mile run on a Saturday morning … or, swimming a mile and then jumping on your bike for a 10 mile sprint.  It’s going through the extremes that helps you to enjoy the journey.  The extremes condition you so you can cover the distance with less pain.  Today I want to tell you about an extreme journey taken by my friend Angela Bailey…

Running Inspiration

February 22nd, 2012 by Lisa Duscio

The NYC Half Marathon is coming up on March 18.  (We still have a few bibs left if you would like to join us!)  As a race approaches, I often ponder how important the runners are to our organization.  The funds raised by our runners are critical to sustaining and growing the Inheritance of Hope Legacy Retreats.  These retreats are one of the main outreaches of IOH, reaching families across the nation with hope and support for their journey facing a life-threatening diagnosis.

I was privileged to participate in this February’s Disney Legacy Retreat that took place a couple weeks ago.  12 families attended – and lives were impacted and changed – in both families attending and volunteers serving.

Run…Walk…Finish! A Team IOH runner’s story

January 18th, 2012 by Lisa Duscio

How many times have we gotten to a point in life where we feel we can’t go any further?  Often, the way we make it through those times is through the help and encouragement of a friend.  In this blog, Lara Miller shares her experience about joining Team IOH for the Disney Marathon on January 8, 2012 – and the blessing of becoming friends and running with Nicole.

Christmas Joy

December 21st, 2011 by lisa

IMG_1039

I recently received an email that linked to an article called “50 Economic Numbers That Are Almost Too Crazy To Believe”.  The article was a slide show with captions covering how badly (even worse than we think) the economy is performing ranging from unemployment to debt to homelessness to foreclosures.  The article made me think about the cares of this world stealing our joy…

A Thankful Heart

November 23rd, 2011 by Lisa Duscio

DSC_0103

I’ve been a member of the 2011 NYC Legacy Retreat Fans Group these past few days.  This group was set up in the IOH Community on the Inheritance of Hope website to follow the ‘latest’ as the Legacy Retreat unfolded.  Sixteen families from across the nation gathered in NYC to create family memories and build a community of support as they all had in common a parent diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.  As I watched the Retreat unfold since this past Sunday, I have had an overwhelming sense of thanksgiving…

Thank You Veterans

November 10th, 2011 by Lisa Duscio

The Marine Corps Marathon finishes with an incline for the last .2 miles of the 26.2 mile race, ending at the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Arlington.  The memorial depicts the 5 Marines and 1 U.S. Navy corpsman that raised the American flag using a pipe found in wreckage at the summit of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima, February 23, 1945.  The battle at Iwo Jima lasted 36 days with many casualities – 21,800 Japanese and 6,800 American lives were lost.  Many, many more American soldiers were injured.
