Today’s the day!

Saturday, February 4th, 2012 by Shelly Storm

Hurray!  Today is the day we’ve been looking forward to — the beginning of the February 2012 Disney Legacy Retreat!  The staff and volunteers are in Orlando and are so looking forward to picking up all the wonderful families soon. It’s a beautiful day here in Florida — so many good things are in store!

We are very excited to meet and welcome 12 families and 35 staff and volunteers from Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan, Kansas, New York, Georgia, and North Carolina.  The Double Tree hotel has been extremely gracious to us, making us feel very comfortable.

We are coming from many places to share an amazing Legacy Retreat!

If you haven’t already, please join the Fans Group to see updated pictures, videos and posts each day.

A New Suitcase!

Friday, January 13th, 2012 by Jill Thompson

I have a great job.

I get to meet beautiful families that are faced with some difficulties and plan a dream vacation for them.

The absolute BEST part of my job is the phone call when I tell them it is their turn to go on this dream vacation.

Many people cry. They all echo words of gratitude and emotion. Many are overwhelmed and even slightly speechless. Read the rest of this entry »

Dream Big

Friday, January 6th, 2012 by Jill Thompson

As we were driving to my son’s preschool graduation, my sweet 5 year old was explaining that he and each of his classmates were going up on stage and they were going to have to say in the microphone what they want to be when they grow up.

“What are you going to say?” I asked him.

“A drum player….. I would really like to change my answer but I can’t because it is too late.”

“Why?”

“It’s already printed on my diploma.” Read the rest of this entry »

Mostly Sweet

Friday, December 23rd, 2011 by Jill Thompson

This time of year most of us are very blessed to spend a lot of time with our families.  Sometimes this is the only time of year we get to see some of them. It is always one of my favorite things about the holiday season. I love hanging out with my parents and siblings and in-laws.

bildeOne thing I have learned in my experience and conversations with others is no family is perfect. I would venture to guess that behind every Norman Rockwell painted smile there are a few snickers, giggles, questionable glares and possibly even tears. Likely on the bottom of the perfectly-browned, perfectly-seasoned, perfectly-shiny, perfectly-PAINTED turkey there is a real turkey that is a little too dry and maybe slightly burned, that came out of an oven that is perfectly covered in the caked on messy juices from a day of cooking. The oven you look at and think “I really need to clean that sometime.”

I think it is easy to look at other people’s life, or Christmas card photo, and think, “Wow, they have the perfect family. They have no idea what goes on in my house at Christmas. I’m so glad she won’t be looking in my oven.” Read the rest of this entry »

A Night Out

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 by Jill Thompson

Tonight everyone enjoyed a night out! Even the rain couldn’t damper our delight to head out on the town.

All of the parents were given gift cards to eat at a fancy New York City restaurant.  They were thrilled to have a nice evening just as adults, but not as thrilled as their children were to have Kids Night Out!   Read the rest of this entry »

Today has been a great day! The weather has been fantastic and all the families are enjoying each other and New York City.

This morning’s blog update proved to be an accurate description of everything we have done.  In other words, everything has gone according to plan!  I love it when that happens.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Big Apple

Friday, November 11th, 2011 by Jill Thompson

NYC SkylineTen days from today 16 families from 10 different states will arrive in New York City for a trip of a lifetime. They will arrive from California, Florida, Missouri, Minnesota, Georgia, North Carolina, Washington, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and South Dakota.

Although we serve a wide variety of families with a wide variety of conditions it always amazes me that the community that develops at our Legacy Retreats is very rich and unified.  These families may come from all over the country but they have much in common. One of the commonalities is their excitement regarding this retreat.  Understandably so…. Read the rest of this entry »

I Got Your Back!

Friday, October 21st, 2011 by Jill Thompson

I got your back

Recently I saw this cartoon and it really made me laugh.  What a silly expression of a phrase that we use often for encouragement and strength for those we care about.

I remember (way back) in high school when I first heard this phrase and some tough guys were planning a fight.  One of the guys said to his buddy, “I got your back.”

Basically he was saying, “if you need me I’m right behind you”…”when things are going badly for you I will step in and be on your team”…”you’re not alone”…”I’m with you in this”. Read the rest of this entry »
