Today’s the day!

Saturday, February 4th, 2012 by Shelly Storm

Hurray!  Today is the day we’ve been looking forward to — the beginning of the February 2012 Disney Legacy Retreat!  The staff and volunteers are in Orlando and are so looking forward to picking up all the wonderful families soon. It’s a beautiful day here in Florida — so many good things are in store!

We are very excited to meet and welcome 12 families and 35 staff and volunteers from Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan, Kansas, New York, Georgia, and North Carolina.  The Double Tree hotel has been extremely gracious to us, making us feel very comfortable.

We are coming from many places to share an amazing Legacy Retreat!

If you haven’t already, please join the Fans Group to see updated pictures, videos and posts each day.

A New Suitcase!

Friday, January 13th, 2012 by Jill Thompson

I have a great job.

I get to meet beautiful families that are faced with some difficulties and plan a dream vacation for them.

The absolute BEST part of my job is the phone call when I tell them it is their turn to go on this dream vacation.

Many people cry. They all echo words of gratitude and emotion. Many are overwhelmed and even slightly speechless. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s a Small World

Friday, May 27th, 2011 by Jill Thompson

Deric and Kristen Milligan with Mickey Mouse30 days from today Inheritance of Hope will be welcoming 16 families from all over the country to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida for a trip of a lifetime!!!  As I get to know these families, I am amazed at some of the similarities.  In my mind I already see the friendships developing between the children of similar ages and the parents with the same illnesses.

We even have two families that (when I google mapped their addresses) live just a few miles from each other! (It’s a small world after all….) These families are strangers right now but in a month they will be friends AND neighbors (literally)!

Although we serve a wide variety of families with a wide variety of conditions it always amazes me that the community that develops at our Legacy Retreats is very rich and unified.  These families may come from all over the country but they have much in common. Read the rest of this entry »

Bittersweet

Monday, January 10th, 2011 by Jill Thompson

Three days ago we arrived as virtual strangers, and now we are saying goodbye to wonderful friends.

There is no doubt everyone involved in this 2011 Disney Legacy Retreat, from staff and volunteers to family members, is leaving this weekend changed.  Tommy Booth said that the Inheritance of Hope Legacy Retreat was perfect for his family: “I’ve never seen my mom smile this much.” Read the rest of this entry »

The Magic Continues

Monday, January 10th, 2011 by Jill Thompson

This post was authored by Inheritance of Hope volunteer Mary Finch.

Today the families got to explore the Disney Parks once again.  Some chose to see wildlife in Animal Kingdom while others chose to check out the classics in the Magic Kingdom.  Either way, a fun time was had by all.

The Hurlbut family especially had fun visiting the main attractions at Epcot including, but by no means limited to, Soarin’, Test Track, and Ellen’s Dream.

Another fun-filled day!

Sunday, January 9th, 2011 by Jill Thompson

After another morning of productive group time gaining tools to navigate the challenges they face, families set off for the Disney parks with their park hopper passes.  Despite the crazy winter weather moving through the Southeast, we had another sunny day in Orlando  with highs in the 60’s. A Magical Day

No doubt this day was special!  All of the families had a wonderful time in the Disney Parks and there were lots of smiles and stories to share this evening.

DSC_0147Please check out all the twitter feeds to read the moment by moment action by each family.  I must admit I have delegated out my “tweeting” to a very lovely and capable volunteer named Jacey.  She is gifted with words and enthusiasm and I know she enjoys keeping everyone up-to-date with the families and activities of this Inheritance of Hope Legacy Retreat.  (Thanks Jacey!)
